Zwembad Pireng has long been known as an important community facility in Saramacca. For many residents, it was a place where children learned to swim, families gathered and social memories were created. Over the years, however, the swimming pool deteriorated and had to close due to deep cracks, major subsidence and erosion problems along the Saramacca River.
To make the renewal possible, the project is being carried out in phases. The first phase focuses on strengthening the riverbank through a concrete sheet pile wall near the swimming pool. This step is necessary to create a safe and stable foundation before the pool itself can be rebuilt. The planned works also include a new competition pool of approximately 265 m² with four lanes and a children’s pool of approximately 65 m².
With an estimated contribution of USD 600,000, Staatsolie supports the rehabilitation of Zwembad Pireng as part of its 45th anniversary social investment programme. The project is implemented in cooperation with the Districtscommissariaat Saramacca and aims to return the swimming pool to the community as a safe, functional and welcoming space.
Through this project, Staatsolie helps preserve an important community landmark and supports access to sports, recreation and swimming opportunities in Saramacca. The renewed Zwembad Pireng will give children, families and the wider community a place to learn, exercise, gather and create new memories.
